Stars of the 90's - Then and Now

Following last week's post about 90's style, I felt inspired to investigate the stars of the 1990's and show you guys the effect the past two decades have had on them.

Hilary Duff

Star of Lizzie McGuire is now more likely to be seen out and about with her hubby and son Luca.
Kate Moss

This grungy It model was dating Johnny Depp but is now more likely to be seen chilling with her family in the countryside.

Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen

Showcasing the typical 90's style (above left), these stylish twins are now more likely to be seen designing their own fashion line whilst rocking their eclectic taste in clothes.
Claire Danes
She was the star of the cult classic My So Called Life but is now more likely to be seen juggling motherhood with her award winning role in Homeland.
Sarah Michelle Gellar

She was a teenage vampire slayer with the weight of the world on her shoulders. Now she is more likely to be seen making the odd Scooby Doo film or having babies with co star Freddie Prinze Jr.

Melissa Joan Hart

Sabrina the Teenage Witch is now likely to be seen always being pregnant! Is it just me or is she always having babies?

Britney Spears

Superstar Brit is now likely to be seen relaunching her music career, judging on talent shows and bringing up her two sons.

Katie Holmes

She was acting in the popular TV show Dawson's Creek but is now more likely to be seen battling ex Tom Cruise for custody of daughter Suri, whilst relaunching her acting career in the West End.
Michelle Williams
She co-starred with Katie Holmes in Dawson's Creek but is now more likely to be seen winning prestigious acting awards, and bringing up daughter Matilda.
Lindsay Lohan
She was the cute child star who convinced the world she had a twin, but is now more likely to be seen crashing cars/being arrested/taking drugs/partying/drinking/spending the odd stint in jail/rehab (delete as applicable).

The Do's and Don'ts of the 90's Revival

So Summer 2013 is just around the corner, which means...FESTIVALS! This year also brings the return of 90's fashion. To commemorate this, I've created a list of the 90's trends I'm looking forward to seeing...and those that should definitely stay in the past.

DO'S

  1. Jelly Shoes
These bad boys recall images of sandcastles, donkey rides and ice cream. The Topshop collection are certainly tempting, particularly as my mum never let me have heeled ones as a kid.
  2. Sweatshirts around the waist Very practicool (see what I did there?), how did this ever go out of fashion?! Easy for a laidback, preppy look without the fuss.
  3. Dungarees Perfect for the Summer, but tricky for festivals. Yes, they save room in your bag but they're not so great for toilet trips.
  4. Baseball Caps
These are great for bringing an outfit together, and keeping the sun out of your eyes. Maggie is wearing a Topshop hat in a brilliant aztec print.
  5. Crop Tops
Maggie is wearing a stripy crop top from Urban Outfitters (far left and bottom), paired with pale denim jeans, duck socks and grey flats. I am wearing a pineapple crop top from River Island, a Jack Wills denim skirt and Converse (middle). The last one is a Topshop crop top (try saying that really fast), paired with a striped H&M skirt.
I am loving crop tops right now, and they are perfect for most figures. If you are fortunate enough to have washboard abs, I have no doubt that you'll be rocking this look all Summer (weather permitting). If you're less confident, wear with something high waisted. These are great for the Summer, brilliant for layering in the cooler evenings, and there are so many different styles to choose from you'll be lost for choice.
  6. Garish Sweatshirts
Both the sweatshirt and jumper are from Topshop. Trainers from H&M.
I'm thinking Will Smith circa Fresh Prince of Bel Air. I don't know why but I'm like a moth to a flame when I see one. Like a magpie and shiny things...Harry and Voldemort? Enough with the analogies, you get it.

DON'TS

  1. Backwards Cap
The only excuse for wearing hats like this is if you're being ironic, which, I assure you, Maggie is being here.
  2. Butterfly Clips
Ah, I remember these, might even have some lurking in a draw somewhere. However, only children can pull these off. Only thing is, I can never remember them staying in my head for long.
  3. Chokers C'mon, we all tried this at some point. I remember using mine as both a necklace and headband. Now that is forward thinking. However, they are probably the most uncomforatble item of the 90's and so have made it onto this list.
  4. Hair Curtains
This is one for the guys. It never looks good, even if you are Brad Pitt...oh wait...Leonardo Di Caprio? Well let's just say they are exceptions to the rule.
  5. Double Denim
I know the recent general opinion on double denim is positive but whenever it's mentioned it conjures up the unwanted image of Justin and Britney. Maggie disagrees and decided to show me how it's done. What do you think? Are you pro double denim, or agree it should never be worn again?
  6. Crimped Hair
Not even Hilary Duff could pull this one off.
The horror! This suits no one - not even supermodels, let alone us mere mortals. Keep your distance.
